I really enjoyed reading “The Not-So-Jolly Roger.” I found this book to be an easy read, and something that students would really enjoy. I love the fact that the book included facts in the reading, so the students are learning things that are really worth while without even knowing it! I find that students much rather read these types of books, instead of straight information/factual books. I know as a student myself, I much rather read books like “The Not-So-Jolly Roger” as well. I think it is very important as future teachers that we include these type books in our classroom. With this book including information on Blackbeard, you could use this book to introduce this very famous pirate!

I really enjoyed reading this manuscript! I have to say that I am so excited about starting this unit on Pirates. Although, since Pirates really play a bigger part in the forth grade curriculum, really wish there was some way to use this until with a younger grade because it seems like so much fun. I loved the idea of playing the Pirate music in the background as the students come in and check out the different stations. I really believe that this will get the students excited about the lesson right from the start.

I know as an adult I am excited about reading these Pirate books and taking a closer look at what they are about, so I know the students will be as well. I really like the fact that there are fiction and non-fiction books included for the students to look at. I feel like when providing an assortment of books, there will be something in one of them that a child can relate to on a more personal level.

I am so glad that I finally have an example of a real unit plan. This is going to make my life so much easier when it comes time for me to plan my own unit, and I can look to this one as a reference. I have always felt overwhelmed by the thought of planning my own unit, so now I feel more at ease about the whole thing, so thank you!

All about my name…

Well…first of all my full name is Kasey Nichole Yow. My family and close friends just simply call me “Kase”. I called my parents to see if I could find out any information about my name, and they told me a few things to help me out. My mom said when she met my dad in high school he was a delivery boy for NAPA Auto Parts. While working with NAPA one of the guys that my dad worked with had named their daughter “KC”. Mom told me that after my dad heard that name, he said if he ever had a little girl he wanted to name her “KC”. After two older brothers, I finally came along..their little girl. Mom had always remembered dad saying if they had a little girl her name was going to be KC, but mom was not too crazy about the spelling of the name. After compromising they decided to keep the name “KC” but to spell it the way my name is spelled today (Kasey).

I then began to ask her where my middle name Nichole came from. She didn’t have a story behind this name quite like the other, she just simply said, “We picked it out of a baby book, because it sounded good with Kasey.” I thought that was a good enough reason!

I figured my dad could help me out a little more with my last name, since it did come from his side of the family. I learned that the name “Yow” is Scott-Irish. My dad said as far back as he could remember everyone in our family spelled it “Yow”. Although, after my great grandpa passed away my dad was passed down some books. While looking though some of the books that he inherited he learned that the Yow’s from way back in our family used to spell it “Yowell”. We are not really sure when or why the “ell” was dropped off the end of our last name, but that is the story behind where my last name came from!

While looking on howmanyofme.com I learned that there are 1 or fewer people in the US named Kasey Yow. I found this so interesting, I thought maybe I had done something wrong, so I put in some of my friends names and saw that there were tons of their names being used around the world. I learned today just how unique my name really is!

After reading several poems from All the Small Poems and Fourteen More by Valerie Worth, I found myself to be so intrigued by her writings. While reading several of her poems I began to notice that it was bringing a smile upon my face. I have to say you, you know you have crossed some impressive writing when it makes you ex

perience different emotions just by reading it. Several of her poems, related to different things in my life. I believe since I was able to read these poems, and it instantly triggered my mind to something else, I really enjoyed reading them. One poem that I really enjoyed was titled “Pumpkins”

After its lid

Is cut, the slick

Seeds and stuck

Wet strings

Scooped out,

Walls scraped

Dry and white,

Face carved, candle

Fixed and lit,

Light creeps

Into the thick

Rind: giving

That dead orange

Vegetable skull

Warm skin, making

A live head

To hold its

Sharp gold grin.

I really believe there is no better way of describing this particular event any better. I love her poems because they are so simple and to the point, yet the still include everything that is needed to be said. The reason this poem really caught my attention is because I adore Fall. With this fabulous season right around the corner, I can not wait to carve a pumpkin with my fiancé Jeremy! This is one thing we have done together ever since we began dating five years ago, and I can not wait for another year to come!

I had a really good first impression of the Notebook Know-How. I am really glad that there are people like this in the world that take time to write books like this because they are so helpful to me. I just wish I was more engaged in talking to other people and finding out where to find books like this, that offer so much useful information. I felt like this book so far is an easy read. I am not one who just really enjoys sitting down with a book and reading it, but I honestly did enjoy reading this. I did not get the impression of this being a “text” book at all, which I really liked. There were several things that I stared or noted in a different location about ideas that I liked in the book. This is really unusual for me because usually when I “read” more like “look over the words”, I do not absorb anything. With this book, this was not the case at all. I believe the authors’ purpose in writing this book was to inform people that we need to incorporate writing more in our daily lives. Not only that but it needs to become a more natural part of our lives, something that we really enjoy doing. As a future teacher my goals are to help my students become great writers. I know that in my elementary school, from what I remember writing was not a big part of our daily routine. Writing is something that I have always enjoyed, because I feel like it is a way to get my frustration out in a calm and collective manner. I want my students to be able to expresses themselves in their writing and not just tell me what they think I want to hear. I want my students to be themselves when writing. I felt like the way she went about launching the notebook was a great idea, in fact that is one of the parts that I took note of while I was reading. I really felt like that was an excellent way to get her students excited about writing, and I plan to use this technique in my classroom. I consider myself to be a pretty organized person, although I believe there are other ways of organizing your notebook that may be more beneficial to the students. I know there are times I like to write, but it is things that I would like to keep to myself, a “me space”. I think it would be a good idea to organize the student’s notebook into sections. With this you could allow a section for more structured writing with assigned topics, and a section for the students to reflect on what ever they are feeling at the moment. I think students may feel more comfortable doing it like this because you could tell them that the “me” section, is just for them and that it will not be read unless they wanted it to be.
